Venice Climate Overview

Venice has a humid subtropical climate with distinct seasons, heavily influenced by its lagoon location and the Adriatic Sea. Summers are hot and sticky, winters are cold and damp, and the famous acqua alta (high water) can flood St. Mark’s Square between autumn and spring. Humidity is part of the deal here – the city is built on water, after all.

The best weather windows are late spring and early autumn, when temperatures are pleasant and the summer tourist crush hasn’t yet arrived or has just departed. Winter brings moody fog that transforms the canals into something out of a Turner painting. Summer delivers that golden Italian light but also crowds that can make narrow alleyways nearly impassable.
