The Cinque Terre, a string of five centuries-old fishing villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline, sits within the Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre in Liguria, between Genoa and La Spezia. Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore cling to steep terraced hillsides above the Ligurian Sea, connected by hiking trails carved into the cliffs, a railway tunnel bored through the headlands, and a seasonal ferry service. The entire area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, designated in 1997 for its cultural landscape of terraced vineyards, dry-stone walls, and pastel-coloured tower houses that represent a 1,000-year relationship between human labour and a dramatic coastline.

Welcome to Cinque Terre: Weather at a Glance

The Cinque Terre has a classic Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. July and August bring daily highs of 29 degrees C (84 degrees F) and just 25 to 35mm of monthly rainfall. The swimming season stretches from late May through early October, with sea temperatures peaking at a comfortable 25 degrees C (77 degrees F) in August. Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) deliver the best hiking conditions: sunny days in the 19 to 25 degrees C range with moderate rainfall. October is the wettest month at 140mm, and heavy autumn downpours occasionally trigger trail closures due to landslides. January is the coolest month at 11 degrees C (52 degrees F), and most seasonal businesses in the smaller villages close from November through February.

The microclimate varies between villages. Monterosso and Vernazza, facing west and southwest, receive more afternoon sun and are more sheltered from the tramontana north wind. Corniglia, perched 100 metres above the sea on its headland, catches stronger breezes that moderate the summer heat. Manarola and Riomaggiore, tucked into south-facing valleys, heat up more during summer afternoons but also benefit from the sea breeze funnelling up their valleys.

Seasonal Snapshot

  • Spring (March to May): Wildflowers on the trails, 14 to 21 degrees C. Easter processions in all villages. The Lemon Festival in Monterosso (third weekend of May). Best hiking conditions of the year.
  • Summer (June to August): Hot and sunny, 25 to 29 degrees C. Sea at 22 to 25 degrees C. All services open. San Giovanni fireworks (June 24) in Monterosso. Ferragosto (August 15) is the busiest day. Book months ahead.
  • Autumn (September to November): September is the sweet spot at 25 degrees C with warm sea and thinning crowds. October brings 140mm of rain but golden light for photography. The Vernazza Fish Festival and Riomaggiore Grape Harvest Festival bookend the season.
  • Winter (December to February): Quiet and moody at 11 to 12 degrees C. Half of restaurants and hotels close. Manarola illuminated Christmas presepio (December 8 to late January) is the main draw. Trail closures possible after heavy rain.

Location and What Makes the Climate Unique

The Cinque Terre sits on the eastern Ligurian Riviera, roughly 85km south of Genoa and 15km northwest of La Spezia. The Apennine Mountains rise immediately behind the coast, creating a steep topography that has shaped both the agriculture (terraced vineyards and lemon groves clinging to near-vertical slopes) and the climate. The mountains block cold air from the Po Valley in winter, keeping the coast milder than inland Liguria. The Ligurian Sea moderates temperatures year-round: the water acts as a heat reservoir, warming slowly in spring and cooling slowly in autumn, which extends the swimming season well into October. The prevailing wind is the libeccio from the southwest, which brings moisture in autumn and can make ferry services choppy; the tramontana from the north brings clear, dry weather in winter.
