Reggio Calabria sits at the very tip of Italy’s boot, where the Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas meet at the Strait of Messina. Sicily rises just 3.2km across the water, close enough that you can read the signs on Messina’s buildings from the Lungomare Falcomatà promenade. With 168,000 residents, it is the largest city in Calabria and the historic capital of Magna Graecia, the Greek-colonized southern Italy that flourished from the 8th century BC. Two bronze warriors pulled from the sea in 1972 anchor the city’s status as a cultural destination, but Reggio also delivers beaches, mountain hiking, bergamot-scented everything, and a ferry to Sicily that costs less than a cappuccino.

Welcome to Reggio Calabria

Most travelers arrive by train from Naples or Rome, or by the 30-minute ferry from Messina. The city unfolds along a single waterfront axis: the Lungomare Falcomatà stretches for about a kilometer from the port to Punta Calamizzi, lined with date palms and Liberty-style villas that survived the devastating 1908 earthquake. Inland, Corso Garibaldi runs parallel as the main shopping street through the centro storico, connecting Piazza Duomo in the north to Piazza De Nava in the south. The Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia sits near the southern end of this axis, housing the Riace Bronzes that are worth the trip alone. Beyond the city, the Aspromonte mountains rise to 1,956 meters within 30 minutes’ drive, and the fishing village of Scilla waits 22km north with one of Italy’s most photographed coastlines.
