Catania is Sicily’s second city, a baroque powerhouse built from black lava stone at the foot of Mount Etna. With a UNESCO-listed historic center, one of Italy’s best fish markets, 300+ days of sunshine a year, and Europe’s most active volcano 30km away, it delivers more per square kilometer than almost any other Italian destination. Catania is grittier than Palermo and less polished than Taormina, but it’s real, affordable, and rewards travelers who like a city with an edge.

Welcome to Catania

Founded by Greeks in 729 BC, destroyed by earthquakes and Etna eruptions multiple times (most recently the catastrophic 1693 earthquake that leveled southeastern Sicily), and rebuilt in the ornate Baroque style that now defines its center, Catania is a city that refuses to stay down. The dark lava stone used in its churches and palazzi gives the city a distinctive, brooding look that lightens in the golden evening sun. The fish market (La Pescheria) has been operating behind Piazza del Duomo for 2,700 years and is worth the trip alone. The city’s patron saint, Agatha, is celebrated in February with one of Italy’s largest religious festivals, bringing a million people to the streets. And then there’s Etna, constantly smoking, occasionally erupting, always watching.

Catania Weather at a Glance

Catania has a classic Mediterranean climate (Koppen Csa): hot, bone-dry summers and mild, moderately wet winters. Summer (June-September) brings temperatures of 28-32degC (82-90degF) with almost zero rain. July averages just 3mm of rainfall. The sea warms from 19degC (66degF) in May to a peak of 26degC (79degF) in August and stays above 22degC (72degF) until mid-October. Winter is mild at 16-17degC (61-63degF) daytime but rain picks up to 75-82mm per month from November through January. Catania gets about 300 days of sunshine annually and roughly 500mm of total yearly rain. The sirocco wind from North Africa can push summer temperatures to 38-40degC (100-104degF) for 2-3 day stretches.

Seasonal Snapshot

  • Spring (March to May): 18-24degC (64-75degF), 3-6 rainy days per month. The best season for sightseeing and Etna hiking. Wildflowers on the volcano’s slopes. Sea still cool (15-19degC) until late May.
  • Summer (June to August): 29-32degC (84-90degF), 1-2 rainy days per month. Peak beach season. August is crowded and hot. The city hums with outdoor life until late at night.

Where is Catania?

Catania sits on the Ionian Sea on the eastern coast of Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean. It’s 210km southeast of Palermo (2h30 by car or train), 115km south of Messina (the ferry gateway from mainland Italy, 1h15 by car), and 55km south of Taormina. The city is built largely on lava flows from Etna’s historic eruptions, most notably the 1669 eruption that reshaped the coastline and destroyed parts of the city. The active volcano dominates the northern horizon; on clear days, the smoking summit is visible from almost every street running north-south. Catania is Sicily’s main transport hub on the eastern side, with the island’s busiest airport and a major train station on the Messina-Siracusa line.
