Lucca sits on the Serchio River plain in northern Tuscany, 20km from the Ligurian coast and 80km west of Florence. What sets it apart is the 4.2km ring of 16th-century Renaissance walls, intact and transformed into a tree-lined park, encircling one of Italy’s best-preserved medieval city centers. Unlike hilltop Tuscan towns, Lucca is flat, shaded, and built for bicycles. The city’s climate is classic inland Tuscany: mild wet winters, warm dry summers, and two shoulder seasons that bring the best weather for exploring the cobblestone streets, climbing medieval towers, and sitting at outdoor cafes on Piazza dell’Anfiteatro.
Welcome to Lucca
You come to Lucca for the walls. Not to storm them but to walk, cycle, and picnic on top of them. The ramparts, built between 1504 and 1645, were never tested in battle: the city bought its way out of conflict and the walls became a 19th-century public park instead of a defensive position. Today they’re the defining feature of the city and the first thing you should do after dropping your bags. The historic center inside holds Roman ruins, Pisan-Romanesque churches, two medieval towers you can climb, and the birthplace of opera composer Giacomo Puccini. Lucca is also the closest major Tuscan city to the Versilia coast: Viareggio’s beaches are a 15-minute train ride away.
Lucca Weather at a Glance
Lucca has a Mediterranean climate with some continental influence from the Apuan Alps to the north. Summers are hot and mostly dry: July averages 31°C (88°F) during the day and 18°C (64°F) at night with only 25mm of rain. Winters are cool and damp: January highs reach 11°C (52°F) with lows around 2°C (36°F) and 70mm of monthly rainfall. The rainiest months are October and November, both around 120mm. Spring and autumn offer the best combination of comfortable temperatures and manageable crowds. Snow inside the walls is rare: the last significant snowfall was in 2012.
Lucca Seasonal Snapshot

- Summer (June to August): Highs 27 to 31°C (81 to 88°F). The Lucca Summer Festival fills July with concerts on Piazza Napoleone. August sees Italian holidaymakers and the Ferragosto shutdown. Book hotels with air conditioning: not all historic buildings inside the walls have it.

Where is Lucca?
Lucca sits in northern Tuscany on the Serchio River plain, flat and surrounded by mountains. The Apuan Alps rise to the north, Monte Pisano to the south, and the Pizzorne plateau to the east. The Ligurian Sea is 20km west. This location gives Lucca a slightly cooler and wetter climate than inland Tuscan hill towns like Siena: the mountains trap moisture in autumn and block the hottest air in summer. Pisa and its international airport are 35km southwest (25 minutes by train). Florence is 80km east (80 minutes by train). The Versilia coast resorts of Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi are 25km west (15 minutes by train).
